The Major Treaties of the World are an agreement under international law entered into by actors in international law, namely states and international organizations. These may also be known as agreement, protocol, covenant, convention, exchange of letters, exchange of notes, memorandum of understanding.
However, in United States constitutional law, only a treaty that has achieved advice and consent of two-thirds of the United States Senate present is properly designated as a "treaty". If, instead, the President presents a negotiated instrument to the whole Congress for majority approval, the agreement is typically called a "congressional-executive agreement". Treaties can be compared to contracts, both are means of willing parties assuming obligations among themselves, and a party to either that fails to live up to their obligations can be held liable under international law for that breach.
Treaty has a much more restricted meaning under the constitutional law of the United States. It is an international agreement that has received the "advice and consent" of two-thirds of the Senate and that has been ratified by the President. The Senate does not ratify treaties. When the Senate gives its consent, the President acting as the chief diplomat of the United States has discretion whether or not to ratify the instrument. Through the course of U. S. history, several instruments that have received the Senate's consent have nonetheless remained unratified. Those instruments are not in force for the United States, despite the Senate's consent to them.

Speaking about the Overview of International Agreements and Treaties, UN human rights treaties are at the core of the international system for the promotion and protection of human rights. Every UN member state is a party to one or more of the seven major human rights treaties. It is a universal human rights legal system which applies to virtually every child, woman or man in the world. Today WIPO(World Intellectual Property Organization), administers 24 treaties which are the Major Treaties of the World and carries out a rich and varied program of work, through its member States and secretariat, that seeks to:
- harmonize national intellectual property legislation and procedures,
- provide services for international applications for industrial property rights,
- exchange intellectual property information,
- provide legal and technical assistance to developing and other countries,
- facilitate the resolution of private intellectual property disputes, and
- marshal information technology as a tool for storing, accessing, and using valuable intellectual property information.
