The Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs has been listed as one of the major treaties of the world. The Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs can be described as an international treaty that was signed with a motive to bring down the illicit trade of drugs. The illegal manufacture of drugs and their trafficking had raised panic all over the world, because of which a treaty was brought into the notice of the world. The illicit trade of narcotics is the base of the drug control regime globally. The treaties which came before the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, they mainly worked with the objective of coca, opium, and the drug derivatives like heroin, cocaine and morphine. The Single Convention was adopted in the year 1961. These treaties were then consolidated where their scope was broadened to an even bigger horizon and this was done with a motive to include cannabis and monitor control over the illicit trade of drugs which should have similar effects as that signed on the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.
The World Health Organization and the Commission on Narcotic Drugs worked on with the motive of removing and transferring the drugs. These drugs were amongst the druges which were mentioned in the four Schedules of the controlled substances in the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. The International Narcotics Control Board was assigned the responsibility of administering all controls over the production of drugs, to monitor the international trade of these drugs and its dispensation as well. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime which is abbreviated as UNODC was assigned the day-to-day work of the board for the monitoring of the situation. The situation to be monitored was for each country and they the organization was also assigned the responsibility to cooperated with the national authorities that ensure the fulfillment of the objective of the Single Convention. Since then, the Convention on Psychotropic Substances has supplemented the treaty and monitors the drug trades on Ecstasy, LSD, and other pharmaceuticals which have psychoactive importance. The United Nations Convention has all the provisions against the laundering of money and other offenses which are related to the use of drugs or narcotics.
The Single Convention has had a major influence on making the standard national laws for drug control. The Controlled Substances Act of the United States of America of the year 1970 and the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 of the United Kingdom were tailored to fulfill the obligations of the treaty. Both these drugs use the schemes that include Scheduling and the other process which are similar to adding, transferring and removing, of these drugs from the Schedules. By the year 2008, there were 180 parties in the Single Convention. The Single Convention happens to be the first international treaty that did not allow the cannabis.
