The treaty on European union is considered to be one of the major treaties of the world. This treaty works on the basis of three pillars. The three pillar structure of the treaty on European union has its own historical origins when the negotiations had all started up and led to the Maastricht treaty. The main objective of the treaty on European union is to made the place powerful where there existed a community with foreign policy, defence policy and security. The place should also have a criminal co-operation, an asylum, judicial co-operation and immigration policy. However, there are a number of member-states who have opposition to the addition of the powers to these communities. But these were decided based on the fact that these were a little too sensitive where the community’s national sovereignty was concerned and these matters need to be handled in an intergovernmental way. All these matters were handled in the European Political Co-operation or what is also known as the EPC. These matters did not come under the European Community but then, they were tagged along externally to the European Community which comprise two of the three pillars of the union.
The first pillar of the treaty on European union is known as the Common Foreign and Security Policy or CFSP. The CFSP deals with the foreign policy, defence issues, and security. The second pillar of the treaty on European union comprise of JHA, Home Affairs and Justice dealt. These deal with the rest of the policies of the treaty. The latest amendments that were made in the treaties included the cities of Amsterdam and Nice. These have made the additional pillars increasingly supranational. The most notable amongst these are the transfer asylum policy, judicial co-operation in civil matters and Justice and this came into effect after the Amsterdam treaty. The third pillar of the treaty on European union has been renamed Judicial Co-operation in Criminal Matters and Police. The Maastricht Treaty which is formally known as the Treaty on European Union or the TEU formally. The treaty on European Union was signed on February 7 in the year 1992 in Maastricht located in Netherlands. This was done after the final negotiations that were complete on December 9 in the year 1991. This was done by the members who belonged to the European Community. This treaty was enforced on November 1, 1993 at the time of Delors Commission.
This led to the European Union and as a result of these separate negotiations was made on which were based on the monetary union and on the political union. The process of ratification of the treaty on European union was marked by distress in three states. The treaty was rejected by Denmark on 2 June 1992 as it had received less than 50,000 votes. This caused a problem in France and 51.05% only voted.
